Old World Winery
Darek Trowbridge. Saturday August 31st, 2-5pm. $10.
This Saturday we have the great fortune and pleasure of featuring Darek Trowbridge who will be pouring the wines of Old World Winery alongside a couple of his very tasty ciders. A self-proclaimed hippie-redneck and black sheep of the Martinelli estate, Darek is several generations deep into Sonoma County viticulture and as a generational farmer, turns out to be a bona fide fountain of knowledge regarding the region and its history, in addition to his own craft and the more conventional traditions from which it has diverged.
For anyone interested in agriculture or the more scientific, technical, or chemical processes of winemaking and fermentation I’d highly recommend coming armed with a pen, paper, and a couple of questions. Not only is Darek super knowledgeable, he’s quite possibly one of the most genuine and nicest human beings I’ve met in a field full of very nice people. Evidently he’s made quite an impression on me, in fact my first field trip six years ago, was to visit the winery in Fulton and it was quite memorable. We saw a vineyard that was planted in the 1890s and the biggest pile of mulch in the world (ask about mulch). We then splashed around in the Russian River, drank old Pinot Noir and camped overnight. It was a total blast, much like our recent recreation with a mostly new crew.

I don’t get to see Darek very often, but every time I do I learn something new. I find his openness and enthusiasm contagious and am charmed by the twinkle in his eye. It's not like Cormac’s twinkle- that one is frightening.
I’d say more, but you should really just go to the tasting and find out for yourself.
